OK, so this one probably won’t end up in your garage any time soon, but the specs of the new Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 race car are pretty darn tasty – and technology from race cars often finds its way into more affordable road cars too, so it’s worth paying attention.

The Vantage GT3 racer has a modified version of Aston’s production 6.0-litre V12 engine and is set to take over from the DBRS9. This one is expected to produce 600bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque and it has been carefully placed low in the engine bay for optimum balance. Keeping things strong and light inside and out, there’s a carbon fibre propshaft that mates the engine to a Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox with semi-automatic paddle shifters.

Aerospace techniques were used to create a light yet stiff aluminium modular chassis – a boon for race cars and road cars. New aerodynamics with the shortened wheelbase and low engine position mean better handling. Driveability is improved with the race-developed ABS and traction control fitted as standard,

This model will be eligible to compete in plenty of races around the world including the FIA GT3 Championship, ADAC Masters, Nürburgring VLN, Blancpain Endurance Series, British GT, Belcar and Open GT.

Testing of the new car will commence in October, including a 10,000km test programme to make sure it’s going to last the distance, especially in endurance events. Deliveries will start in early 2012 and the pricetag? Starting from a mere £298,000.
