The all-new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV targets sub-120g/km CO2 for the 2.2-litre diesel model. Note new "Kodo" family face

Mazda want their share of the ever-growing compact SUV market, and here’s their all-new CX-5 model planned to fit the tall-car bill. It’ll be first shown in public this September at the Frankfurt motor show, before going on sale in early 2012, priced at around £20k.

The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda cars that will feature the full range of Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” technology – that correctly mixes lighter-weight construction methods with as frugal an engine as possible – and their new design theme; “Kodo – Soul of Motion”.

The Kodo treatment is front-end focused with the CX-5 being the first new Mazda production car to show off the new, more prominent Mazda family face. It’s all about “conveying a strong sense of vitality and agility”, according to the brand.

The engine range for the CX-5 will initially include a 2-litre petrol unit and a 2.2-litre diesel, which will be available in Standard Power and High Power outputs. Each engine has a “record-breaking” compression ratio of 14:1 for increased efficiency; aiming towards CO2 emissions of less than, a rather worthy, 120g/km for the diesel-powered car. The all-new SUV body and chassis will also feature new automatic and manual transmissions.

Joining the CX-5 on Mazda’s stand at the Frankfurt show will be the revised Mazda3 with lower CO2 emissions, enhanced driving dynamics, and updated interior and exterior design.
