Cobra Springs retro range

Looking at this picture of a sweetly stanced, Cobra-assisted old Merc W123 has got me thinking. Our TotallyMotor Alfa Romeo 146 could do with a tasteful suspension drop, and a quick look on the Cobra website confirmed that they do indeed make some -40mm springs for the 146. Hmmm.
Cobra’s UK M.D Ian Smith explains: ‘Many retro fans don’t realise we have over 70 lines available for retro and neo-classic cars. Spring technology has come a long way in the last 20 years, so it’s a great way to improve the stance and handling of your car, but also a great chance to fit a component with a 5 year warranty. They’re a true fit-and-forget proposition and will doubtless enhance the character of a cherished classic.’
And looking at this neatly trimmed ol’ Merc I can only agree.
Lowering springs do exactly what they say on the box, dropping your car from its standard ride height, usually by between 35 and 40mm. They’re usually a little firmer too – but not as hard as more track-focused coilovers – and can help battle the excess bodyroll suffered by older cars.
They work in partnership with your standard dampers, but bear in mind; if your dampers are kaput the addition of stiffer springs will only make your ride bounce like a caffeine-rich Zebedee. Maybe upgrade the dampers too? It’s not as expensive as you think and can transform your favourite oldtimer.
Our Afla has pleasantly firm (for a standard car) suspension and the dampers appear to be in good, non-bouncy nick, but she could certainly sit a little lower. Me thinks it’s time to begin a gentle modifying journey with the Alfa…
