The print hasn’t even dried on a thousand small boys’ new bedroom wall posters as news emerges that Lamborghini’s new carbonfibre road-king, the Aventador LP 700-4, is building a lengthy waiting list.

It seems that all it took was the chance to take a long loving unveiling look at the latest raging bull at last week’s Geneva Motor Show for the power-hungry punters to sign on the dotted line, and get themselves in the growing Lambo waiting line. 

Murcielago’s suitably wild-styled replacement doesn’t start to roll of the currently-under-construction bespoke Sant'Agata Bolognese production line until the latter half of 2011, so at the current rate some Aventador pilots won’t be strapping-in until near Christmas 2012. That’s a long time to wait for such a fabulous present. 

Looking at the Lambo pics and specs however it’s easy to see what’s got customers so entirely hooked, even at just under quarter of a million pounds delivered and on the driveway. 

The 1575kg carbon-tubbed motorway missile can hit 217mph, passing 62mph on the way in just 2.9secs; the four-wheel drive transmission, F1-style pushrod suspension and near-700bhp, 6.5-litre V12 engine effectively delivering 21st century grip and grunt. 

And while driving an Aventador will surely bring waves of admiration from friends, family and the opposite sex; the bunnies and birdies are also feeling the Lambo love with tailpipe pollution quoted at 398g/km; 20 per cent better than the Murcielago. 

Exclusivity is somewhat assured thanks to a predicted production run of around 4000 cars – the Murcielago finally bowed-out of the supercar limelight in May 2010 at 4099 cars built. However, for even more pub car park one-upmanship the four-times-more-expensive Pagani Huayra, while delivering similar performance figures, sits at a price and production level that should see it remain about as rare as cut-price petrol.
