Now available to order, the name of the entry-level Vauxhall Ampera has been revealed. Drumroll, please, it is the Ampera Earth, and UK pricing is at £29,995 including the government's Plug in Car Grant.

It will be on sale to begin with via 24 UK retailers, with the locations chosen so that all Ampera drivers are never more than an hour's drive from a specialist. There is also an agreement with British Gas whereby Ampera drivers can get a charging station installed at home.

This is the base model for Vauxhall's much anticipated extended range electric car but they're promising a high level of spec for the price.

Features include seven-inch touchscreen, digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity, four exterior colours and black cloth trim. There's also a 30GB hard drive (your correspondent is a tad gigabyte-challenged but she assumes this is capacious. How many brake horsepower in 30GB?), six-speaker Bose stereo, front and rear park assist, front heated seats, leather steering wheel, leather seats, Thatcham car alarm, cruise control, remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors and 17-inch aluminium wheels.

The models further up the range are the Positiv (priced at £32,250 including the government grant) and Electron (priced at £33,995 including the government grant).
